About us

Viitapiiri is a registered writers' association (NPO) in Tampere, Finland. The association was founded in 1995. All of our members are either currently enrolled in or have graduated from the three year writers' school Viita-Akatemia (Viita Academy). 15 new students are selected to the school every fall based on their applications and text samples.

Members of Viitapiiri have often been awarded in national writing competitions. A lot of our members have had fiction or non-fiction literature published and regularly provide articles, essays, short stories, poetry etc. in all kinds of publications.

The association participates actively in the area's cultural life and organizes performances for the public. Annually we host an event called Runopiha (Poetry Park) that takes place in Tallipiha, Tampere on Eino Leino's Day, June 6th. Viitapiiri also has a poetry improvisation group Muuntaja (Transformer) that performs together with the audience in various events.

To our members we have discussion and education groups and occasionally we also publish poetry and prose anthologies of our members' texts.

Viitapiiri is interested in cooperation projects with both domestic and international writers' associations and groups, and also in cultural cooperation with groups of different arts. If you or your organization would like to get in touch with us about a project or a visit, please contact our board of directors via the contact page or send us an email.
